Some older people are perfectly content with going to a luxurious nursing home facility. They are usually social people or adventurous souls looking for the next adventure and good conversation. Some older adults are less than enthused about being taken out of their homes and prefer to spend the rest of their days feeling independent and comfortable somewhere familiar.

Here are the five steps to age in your home successfully:

1.  Take good care of your children

What goes around comes around. If you raise your children to the best of your ability and give them comfort, support, happiness, and love, it’s a good bet they will return the favor when you are in need. You will have loved ones looking out for you and begins the process of living a happy life in your older years. Make good relationships with your children’s partners, spouses, and maybe even your new grandchildren.

2.  Prepare financially

Maybe you have been frugal with your savings and have invested wisely. You’ve been frugal and have enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your days. If so, fantastic! You played the game of life well. If you’re not as lucky, it’s time to budget out your finances and make a plan on how to proceed with your life in the near future.

Everyone is different. Make sure you know what your plans will cost you in the short- and long-term.

3.  Time for insurance

All insurances are not created equally. Now that you have caregivers and have a sound financial plan in place, you have a roadmap of what you want and need. Many insurance providers lack coverage for certain network providers. Are you covered? Cheap insurance plans don’t give you many perks, while top-of-the-line plans with matching premiums can deplete your savings.

That can cause a real issue.

Make an informed decision with the help of a trusted loved one or financial advisor and make sure you have an insurance plan that matches your needs and your budget.

4.  Build a support team

Go out and join some groups or clubs so you can meet new people. Try to build meaningful relationships that can last in the last third of your life. Clubs that include members of all walks of life, ages, and financial levels can be a great way to broaden your horizons, meet new people, and perhaps, even meet someone you can trust in a time of need.

5.  Recognize your situation

You’re not the young buck you once were. It’s just the truth of the matter. Don’t let your pride get in the way. Use your walker, wheelchair, walking stick, or other devices. Don’t risk injury just to feel proud in front of your cat.
